Press freedom and the rights of journalists in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories have been subjected to a new violation on April 1st, as the Israeli parliament overwhelmingly approved a law granting the Minister of Communications authoritarian powers over foreign media outlets.

This law, known as the “Al Jazeera Law,” allows the Minister to ban the broadcasting of foreign channels in Israel, close their offices, and block their websites. This measure is seen as a dictatorial step aimed at suppressing freedom of expression and press freedom.

This move is part of a series of repressive actions taken by the Israeli government to silence criticism of its brutal crimes in Gaza. Palestinian journalists in Gaza face a constant threat to their lives and the lives of their families, with many killed and others injured while covering events. Israeli authorities, supported by the Supreme Court, continue to prevent foreign journalists from entering Gaza, obstructing international media coverage of the events there.

Under international law, journalists and media outlets have the right to access information and report freely without government interference or restrictions. The banning and controlling of media is a gross violation of these fundamental rights.

We demand that the Israeli occupation government repeal this repressive law and ensure the protection of journalists’ rights and freedom of expression.

We also call for the opening of Gaza to international journalists and independent investigators to investigate human rights violations and hold those responsible accountable.

We urge the international community to confront these serious violations and pressure Israel to comply with international law and respect human rights and press freedoms.
