The Arab Council strongly condemns the arrest of Professor Rached Ghannouchi, Speaker of the Tunisian Parliament and President of the Ennahda Movement, following a wave of arrests that included opposition democratic political leaders from various orientations.
The Council also denounces the actions taken today by the Tunisian authorities, who surrounded the offices of the Ennahda Movement and the Al-Harak Party, in a blatant violation of the Tunisian people’s right to expression and organization.
The Arab Council holds President Kais Saied fully responsible for the deterioration of the human rights situation in the country, which has been compounded by the alarming decline in the economic and social conditions since the coup of July 25, 2021.
The Council believes that the violations being committed, along with the vindictive actions against peaceful civil opposition leaders, and the inflammatory rhetoric of division, treason, hatred, and sectarianism between Tunisians, are an attempt to cover up the failure of the government’s management of the state. These actions threaten civil peace in Tunisia.
The Arab Council calls on the regional and international powers that continue to support this reckless course, which is in the process of destroying the Tunisian state and compromising its future, to stop supporting this failed dictatorial regime and to lift their hands from the Tunisian people. It is time for Tunisia to return to being, as it was after the Jasmine Revolution, a model of progress and peaceful coexistence.
Signed,
The Arab Council
