On Monday, July 25, 2022, a new draft constitution was passed in #Tunisia, establishing an authoritarian rule with extraordinary powers and full immunity for the President of the Republic, replacing the 2014 constitution of the Tunisian revolution, through a referendum process that was marred by numerous violations and widely boycotted by a large segment of the Tunisian people.
On this occasion, the Arab Council expresses its support for the struggles of the Tunisian political, civil, and youth movements, both past and present, in defense of the constitution, the values of the revolution, and the achievements of democracy, freedoms, and the civil state. The Council calls on these movements to unite their efforts and launch a national dialogue aimed at countering the authoritarian drift of President Kais Saied and saving Tunisia from reverting to the pre-December 17, 2010 era, while providing a roadmap for reforming the political, economic, and social conditions of the country.
The Arab Council believes that the dismantling of the Tunisian Revolution’s constitution has long been a goal of counter-revolutionary regional and international forces, which have spent large sums to create public sentiment against the revolution, focusing on the political mistakes and the weak economic achievements of the era. This is the same effort that occurred in other Arab Spring countries in different forms, leading to the disruption of democratic transitions and a regression to authoritarian rule, with the deterioration of the economy, the fragmentation of society, and the collapse of sovereignty.
While the Arab Council understands that some Tunisians prioritize stability, the end of chaos and corruption, and the improvement of economic and social conditions, it warns them against the false promises and glittering slogans that other peoples in the region have been deceived by, leading them into counter-revolutionary paths that lost all the achievements of their revolutions.
The Council affirms that the entire region is on the brink of a new wave of awareness and popular mobilization aimed at correcting the misguided paths and returning our peoples to the track of change and reform, despite the efforts of regional and international enemies of liberation.
On behalf of the Arab Council
Vice Presidents:
Dr. Ayman Nour
