The Arab Council strongly condemns the military coup against the civilian authority and the democratic path that occurred early today in brotherly Sudan. It denounces the arrests of the Prime Minister, several ministers, and political leaders at a time when it was expected that al-Burhan and Hamidti would transfer power to the civilians and hand over the presidency of the Sovereign Council, as stipulated in the constitutional declaration.

The Arab Council believes that resolving differences in managing the transitional phase should be done through dialogue and negotiation within the framework of pre-established rules, not through the use of force, arrests, restrictions on freedoms, and the declaration of a state of emergency and martial law.

The Council views the military’s justification of the economic crisis and the depletion of fuel and wheat reserves to justify their coup against the civilian component and the achievements of the Sudanese revolution under the guise of “correcting the path of the revolution” as reminiscent of what occurred in counter-revolutions in several Arab countries, supported by the forces of evil that seek to undermine the Arab Spring and the liberation path of the region’s peoples.

The Arab Council affirms its full solidarity with the Sudanese people and supports the struggles of their political, popular, and professional civil forces, along with all forms of peaceful resistance to the coup currently taking place across the country, in defense of democracy, the civil state, and the values, rights, and hopes of the glorious December Revolution.

On behalf of the Arab Council
President: Mohamed Moncef Marzouki
