Today marks the tenth anniversary of the great January 25 Revolution in Egypt. A revolution by the Egyptian people against dictatorship, corruption, and betrayal. A revolution that raised the banners of decent living, freedom, and social justice. A revolution that was conspired against by local, regional, and international forces of evil and corruption, fearful of its major consequences and impact on the region and the world.
On this occasion, the Arab Council expresses:
- Its immense pride in this revolution, which remains alive in the hearts of tens of millions of Egyptians and Arabs alike. A revolution that brought about fundamental changes, which will eventually become evident, despite the attempts by the coup to erase and distort its significance.
- Its deep admiration for the struggles of the Egyptian people before, during, and after the revolution. It honors the memory of its martyrs, especially those who perished in prison after the coup, with President Mohamed Morsi at the forefront.
- Its solidarity with all prisoners of conscience who have been persecuted in Egyptian prisons. The Council calls on Arab and international human rights organizations to support their just cause and intervene to secure their release. It also stands in solidarity with all Egyptian political refugees around the world, who are victims of exile, the stripping of their rights, the confiscation of their properties, and the tormenting of their families.
- Its call to all Egyptian political and civil forces to set aside differences and unite around broad national commonalities and the principles of January 25, to prepare a popular alternative to the current crumbling regime.
- Its conviction that the page of the coup and tyranny will soon be turned, and the country will inevitably return to the path of liberation, democracy, and prosperity that began ten years ago, inspiring immense hopes among Egyptians and the rest of the peoples of the region.
