Elected president of the Egyptian National Forces Union and leader of the Ghad al-Thawra Party. Former Secretary-General of the Wafd Party and a former deputy in the People&#8217;s Assembly for several parliamentary sessions. He ran in presidential elections against Mohamed Hosni Mubarak in the 2005 Egyptian presidential elections and came second.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Alexandria on December 5, 1964.<\/p>\n<p>Graduated from the Faculty of Law, Mansoura University, 1985.<\/p>\n<p>Worked in the press and as a lawyer after obtaining a ruling from the Constitutional Court to combine the membership of two syndicates in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>Joined the Wafd Party in 1984 &#8211; and became the party&#8217;s Secretary-General in Cairo.<\/p>\n<p>Awarded Ph.D. in public law in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Elected as a member of parliament from the downtown Cairo constituency in December 1995 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Was the youngest member of Parliament during 1995-2000, 2000-2005.<\/p>\n<p>Identified as the best parliamentarian in Egypt in the years 2002, 2003, and 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Arrested from inside Parliament in January 2005, 90 days after the establishment of the Al-Ghad Party &#8211; and hours after he announced his intention to run for the presidential elections.<\/p>\n<p>Ran in the first presidential elections in the history of Egypt in September 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Came second out of 10 candidates after fraud and defamation campaigns by Mubarak&#8217;s followers, which was reported and verified by international organizations that monitored the elections.<\/p>\n<p>Arrested for the fifth time in 4 and a half years, on December 5, 2005, after Mubarak was sworn in in Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Released in 2009 to start a door-knocking campaign in which he visited 300 cities, villages, and hamlets, to call for a revolution against the Mubarak regime.<\/p>\n<p>Co-founded the \u201cKifaya\u201d movement in 2004 &#8211; and on October 18, 2010, he called for the establishment of the Egyptian campaign against inheritance (of power to Mubarak\u2019s son), which later turned into the National Association for Change.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted the People&#8217;s Parliament, which stood against fraud in the 2010 Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2011, and from the People&#8217;s Parliament, he made a call to &#8220;leave&#8221; calling for the revolution on January 25<\/p>\n<p>Participated in leading the demonstrations on January 25, and in all supporting activities.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2011, he founded Ghad al-Thawra Party, and was elected as its leader.<\/p>\n<p>Ran for the presidential elections in 2012 &#8211; and was rejected by the intervention of the Military Council, among the list of rejected candidates, which included Khairat Al-Shater &#8211; Omar Suleiman &#8211; Hazem Salah Abu Ismail.<\/p>\n<p>He was elected in 2012 as a member of the Constituent Assembly of the Constitution &#8211; and the Assembly elected him as its representative.<\/p>\n<p>Resigned from the National Council for Human Rights in protest of the Military Council&#8217;s refusal to allow him to visit Dr. Mohamed Morsi and allowing Ashton, President of the European Commission, to visit.<\/p>\n<p>Left Egypt in August 2013 after the Raba\u2019a square massacre, heading to Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>Opposed the military coup in Egypt since July 3, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Moved to Turkey following threats reported to him by the Lebanese authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Owner of Al Sharq Radio and Television Group (&#8220;Al-Sharq&#8221;, &#8220;Al-Sharq al-Awsat&#8221;, &#8220;La&#8221;
