On Monday July 25, 2022, a new constitution was adopted in Tunisia establishing individual power with extraordinary prerogatives and total immunity for the President of the Republic, in place of the 2014 Constitution, the Constitution of the Tunisian Revolution. The adoption of this constitution was done through a referendum process marred by numerous violations and boycotted by a large part of Tunisians.
On this occasion, the Arab Council expresses its support for previous and subsequent Tunisian political, civil and youth struggles for the defense of the constitution, the values of the revolution, the achievements of democracy and freedoms and the civil state. . It calls on these forces to unite their will and to engage in a national dialogue to confront the authoritarian deviation of President Kais Saïd and prevent Tunisia from returning to the pre-revolution of December 17, 2010. This dialogue should lead to the development of a roadmap to reform the country’s political, economic and social system.
The Arab Council considers that the abrogation of the constitution of the revolution was, for many years, the dream of regional and international counter-revolutionary forces who spent huge sums of money in this objective. These forces succeeded in creating a public opinion dissatisfied with the revolution, based on the serious errors of the political actors and the weak economic performance of the various post-revolution governments. It is the same attempt that took place in other countries of the Arab Spring in various forms and led to the interruption of democratic transition processes and the relapse into authoritarian rule. all accompanied by the deterioration of the economy, the disintegration of society and the collapse of sovereignty.
The Arab Council, which understands that the priority of a large part of Tunisians is given to stability, and to stopping chaos and corruption with a view to improving the economic and social situation, warns Tunisians against the false promises and flashy slogans of the regime. He reminds them of the fate of the other peoples of the region who had believed the promises of their dictators and found themselves afterwards in a process of deterioration of the situation in which they lost all the achievements of the revolution.
The Council affirms that the whole region is on the cusp of a new wave of popular awareness and rumble with a view to correcting deviant processes and putting our peoples back on track for change and reform despite the attempts.
For the Arab Council
