The Arab Council expresses its full solidarity with its president, Dr. Mohamed Moncef Marzouki, former President of Tunisia, following the targeting of him by the authorities of the Tunisian coup and their arbitrary, illegal decision to revoke his diplomatic passport and their intention to prosecute him on charges of “espionage and treason.”

The Council considers that this decision, along with the incitement, treason, and smear campaigns orchestrated by the supporters of the coup leader, Kais Saied, and the media outlets of the counter-revolution, supported by Gulf countries, against Tunisia’s first democratically elected president and a key figure of the Arab Spring, reflects the deep confusion of the coup leader and those around him, as well as their great discomfort with the important role Dr. Marzouki plays in resisting the coup, defending the constitution, and championing democracy, just as he did before the revolution against dictatorship.

The Arab Council affirms that the spontaneous campaigns of solidarity with President Marzouki across the Arab world and among many influential figures and organizations worldwide reflect his unwavering value in the nation and his respected position among the intellectual elites globally. These campaigns demonstrate that targeting him will only bring further isolation, illegitimacy, and contempt to the coup regime, which has entangled Tunisia in foreign dependency and weakened its national sovereignty. The regime’s actions will only be met with increasing disapproval from nationalists who believe in the values of democracy, freedom, the rule of law, and institutions, as well as from supporters of justice and truth worldwide.

The Arab Council also affirms that these dirty campaigns and unjust decisions will only strengthen President Marzouki and the Arab Council’s resolve to defend the values of the Arab Spring, tirelessly fight for democracy and popular sovereignty, and combat the schemes of counter-revolutions allied with the enemies of liberation in the Arab world.

On behalf of the Arab Council
Vice President: Tawakkol Karman
Vice President: Ayman Nour
