The Arab Council strongly condemns the shocking verdicts issued by Egypt’s Court of Cassation against several leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in the case of the Rabaa al-Adawiya massacre during the summer of 2013. These included the confirmation of death sentences for 12 leaders and varying prison sentences for dozens of others, including the son of the late President Mohamed Morsi, Osama Morsi.
The Arab Council considers this unjust ruling as reopening the deep wounds of the criminal massacres committed by the military coup in Egypt during the summer of 2013 against thousands of peaceful protesters in the streets. These crimes were documented by international human rights organizations and free conscience groups, and have been considered some of the most heinous crimes against humanity in decades.
As the Egyptian regime has demonstrated over the years its brutality and bloodshed, and its audacity in shedding innocent lives and violating the fundamental rights of its citizens, especially amidst regional and international attempts to whitewash its image, the Arab Council urgently calls on all international organizations, human rights associations, and all advocates of freedom and peace, as well as those who oppose the death penalty worldwide, to take immediate action to prevent the execution of these unjust death sentences and halt all forms of abuse and retribution against prisoners of conscience who have filled Egypt’s jails since the democratic path, born from the 25th of January Revolution, was crushed.
The Arab Council also calls for an international campaign to demand the prosecution of all those involved in the deliberate killing of Egyptians through murder and execution, to be tried before the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.
And the night shall surely pass.
On behalf of the Arab Council
President Mohamed Moncef Marzouki
